How long does data last (data retention) on a 128mb flash drive, without being plugged in - just left in a box
Well, answers like "forever" aren't much use. I understand it would last years and years, but this is going to be for a time capsule (perhaps 100 years). Would USB flash last that long?

Forever. Flash memory is permanent in nature. Maybe much longer than 10 years. CD-R media may last 50 years, according to the Library of Congress.
However, I would not consider it an efficient archive. Here’s why.
CD-R cost: $ 1 for 700MB or about $ 1.50 per GB
Flash memory cost: $ 20 for 500MB or about $ 40 per GB.
( checked prices at http://www.newegg.com )
So you see, flash would cost about 14 times more than CD-R.
