What is the best cure for uncontrollable itch after getting a sunburn?

This is purely from experience. I found a cure and wanted to share it with people who may be suffering from an uncontrollable itch after getting a sunburn. The sunburn doesn’t even need to be that bad, might not have blisters, might just be pink. This is an allergic reaction to the sunburn. This was my 3rd time having it in my life. I Tried every friggin topical solution, ointment, spray, whatever - all of them. Lydocane, Sarna, Aloe, Aloe with menthol, Aloe with whatever, moisturizers, anti itch sprays, Aveno bath, oatmeal, anti itch everything - trust me. Anything like this will make it worse, you'll want to jump in the shower and wash it off - don’t even waste your time or money on any of it!!!! Then I started taking Benadryl (histamine blocker)- helped a little. Took 4 at a time every 4 hrs (WAAAY TOO MUCH), didn’t care - I'd OD on it if it worked, plus Tagamet (a different histamine blocker). helped only a tiny bit.

When you scratch or touch it - it makes it worse. The best way I can describe the feeling is someone throwing needles at your back one at a time, the needles dipped in poison ivy juice first. There's precise spots that flare up, you cant see them, you can only feel them, the itch on a scale (similar to a pain scale) from 1 to 10 is around 1000. One spot itches then slowly goes away, then another over here, another over there - you scratch it or touch it, it goes away for 2 seconds then it itches in the same spot 5 times worse. You want to have the skin cut off your back. You want to walk up to the corner of a wall and scratch like a bear on a tree. You cant function as a human, you cant think, eat, talk much, you certainly cant drive, forget about sleeping at all - you pretty much just want to have someone put you to sleep with an anesthesia like going into surgery or something. If you haven’t had it, you don’t understand. Your spouse will think you’re a wuss because he/she will look at it, and say - It doesn’t look that bad! They don’t get it, no one gets it. It will pretty much drive you insane for 24 hrs - possibly even 72 hrs (my last situation). 3 days of this is absolute torcher. I wouldn’t wish this upon my worst enemy. Until you get the fix, the most I would recommend on touching your back is: put on a clean T-shirt and grab the bottom with one hand and the collar with the other and slightly Ever so gently pull the shirt up and down so it gently gently slides across your back. GENTLY. That's a quick temporary fix until you get this:

Now for the cure (found on the internet after searching for what seemed like days): go to GNC and by a bottle of Pure Peppermint Oil. There's 2 sizes, one is $ 8 the other is $ 18 - personally I’d buy the big bottle in case this lasts for days. Get some gloves and have someone rub it all over your back. If they don’t wear gloves, their hands will feel like they dunked them in Icy Hot -they don’t want that. While they are rubbing it on, you'll feel like a dog being scratched - it feels oooohh soooo gooood. Then it will get cold - real cold - like you're laying on a solid block of ice! It will itch in spots again, suck it up!!! Relief is on its way. Bite down and get through the first few minutes. It took about 20 minutes for it to completely work for me. However when it's working, you will have relief, you will thank me later. Side effects: If you run down the hall with your back feeling like a block of ice - it's weird, it feels like globs of water are falling off your back while you run - very strange - not a big deal. Plus you will stink up the ENTIRE house like peppermint. You will pretty much be a walking candy cane. After about a half hour it feels like your sweating ice water out your back, yet if you touch it - don’t - it's dry. It’s weird. If you get near a fan or AC it will feel even colder - freezing cold - so don’t get near any fans or AC ducts.

My recommendations: Never ever go on vacation again, on an extended beach trip, a cruise, down south, to the islands, Mexico - ANYWHERE you're going to be in the sun with no shirt - without bringing a bottle of Peppermint Oil on that trip. Trust me. Take a bottle with you in case anyone with you gets it. Otherwise you could lose 3 days itching and scratching like a nut. Also: I would recommend taking 1-2 Benadryl pills to help sleep as well.
